Sassuolo–Fiorentina: the lion needs a plan, not just a roar

There is no prize in Reggio Emilia for announcing most convincingly that the crisis is over. Fiorentina will have to pass, run and defend their way out of it. Sassuolo can be hurt. The problem is that Viola have been offering opponents much the same invitation.

The Atalanta draw stopped the sequence of defeats. It did not settle the argument about this team. A little relief can be dangerous if it turns into the assumption that the next result will look after itself. Sassuolo need a response too, and will have circled this fixture for precisely the same reason Fiorentina have.

Read the table before talking about ambition

Sassuolo have eight points, Fiorentina five. A Viola win would bring the clubs level; defeat would leave a six-point gap. That is a more useful starting point than another discussion about the squad’s potential. Source

The hosts have lost three successive league games. Fiorentina ended their own three-match losing run against Atalanta. Both need a result. Neither needs to try to decide the contest in its opening ten minutes. Pressure makes hurried decisions tempting; it does not make them good. Source

Those scores give Fiorentina four goals for and seven against, Sassuolo two and twelve. This is arithmetic from three results, not a forecasting model. The last score needs context: Sassuolo played with ten men from the 31st minute against Lazio after Thorstvedt’s dismissal. Turati subsequently saved two penalties. Six conceded tells us that something went badly wrong, but it cannot describe an entire match played eleven against eleven. Source

Make their holding midfielder choose

I would look first at the spaces either side of Sassuolo’s deepest midfielder. If Matić starts, repeatedly passing into the area directly in front of him makes little sense. Ask him a question instead: follow a player dropping towards the ball, or protect the pass into the striker? One movement should make the next pass available.

Keep a winger wide, send Brescianini between full-back and centre-back, and let Pellegrino occupy the other central defender. The first pass need not produce a shot. Turning the defence towards its own goal can be enough to create a cutback for a midfielder arriving later. I would take two properly supported runs over ten crosses towards an isolated striker.

That is a proposed route for Monday, not a claim that every Sassuolo concession follows this pattern. Their results identify an opportunity. Exploiting it still requires coordinated movement.

Do not leave a full-back to solve two problems

The danger is obvious if Fiorentina send both full-backs forward, lose the ball near the touchline and then chase an attack travelling inwards. Telling a defender to keep Berardi away from his left foot is only the beginning. Who blocks the pass towards Esposito? Who follows the supporting midfielder? Without answers, the full-back is being asked to defend two routes at once.

On the other flank Laurienté should face a pair: the defender delaying him and a recovering winger shutting the inside route. The midfielder slides behind them rather than charging at the ball. It is unglamorous work, usually noticed only when a replay shows that nobody did it.

Give Fagioli passing partners, not spectators

If Fagioli starts centrally, his ability will count for little with every teammate standing beyond the opposition’s first pressure line. He needs one short option, another higher up and an outlet towards the touchline. A player with only one possible pass is easy to read, however good his technique.

The request is not for risk-free football. It is for a sensible choice of where to take risks. Losing possession near Sassuolo’s box with cover already in place is part of attacking. Losing it in front of your centre-backs with both full-backs ahead of the ball is an invitation.

Predicted teams: a forecast, not a team sheet

Sassuolo, 4–3–3: Turati; Cinquegrano or Van der Brempt, Idzes or Odenthal, Ćaleta-Car, Doig; Bakola, Matić, Adžić; Berardi, Sebastiano Esposito, Laurienté.

Fiorentina, 4–3–3 moving towards 4–3–2–1: De Gea; Álex Jiménez, Drăgușin, Viery, João Mário; Ndour, Fagioli, Brescianini; Mastantuono, Pellegrino, Njie. Oulaï is an alternative in midfield, Beto at centre-forward and Gnonto out wide. Source

Thorstvedt is suspended. Fiorentina’s injury reports include Pongračić and Parisi; Atta and Ranieri need checking before the squad announcement. Reports differ on Idzes and Sassuolo’s full-backs, so those choices remain open. Information checked on 31 October. Source

Five meetings, and a misleading memory of 5–1

Two wins each and a draw across this sample. Fiorentina lost their two most recent visits to Sassuolo, having won the previous one 3–1. The emphatic 5–1 happened in Florence. Mixing venues is an easy way to tell a reassuring story that the actual fixtures do not support. Source

The club, the ceramic district and Mapei

Sassuolo’s history predates their television profile by decades. The club dates its beginnings to 17 July 1920. Giorgio Squinzi’s Mapei became sponsor in 2002 and owner in 2003. The distinction matters: the company did not invent Sassuolo, but it provided the platform for a different level of football. Source

Rodolfo Squinzi founded Mapei in Milan in 1937. Its name comes from auxiliary materials for building and industry. Tile adhesives are the familiar face of a wider construction-chemicals business, including mortars and waterproofing. The connection with Sassuolo’s ceramic district is therefore more substantial than a name printed across a shirt. Source

One geographical detail is worth keeping straight: Fiorentina are playing Sassuolo in Reggio Emilia. The hosts have used Mapei Stadium since 2013/14. The Colosseum in our illustration is a setting for an allegory, not the venue of the match. Source

What I will be watching

Aquilani’s past in Florence, including his youth-coaching work, gives the occasion a personal thread. It will not defend a cross. My attention will be on three less romantic details: whether somebody protects the centre immediately after a turnover; whether the striker receives a ground pass inside the box; and whether a lead can be protected with possession rather than another hurried clearance.

I would not call this a season-defining final. It is, however, an excellent test of whether Fiorentina can exploit another team’s uncertainty without feeding it with their own mistakes.

My prediction: Sassuolo 1–2 Fiorentina, a narrow preference rather than a calculated probability. It depends on attacking with cover and resisting the urge to chase every setback at once. Turn it into an exchange of unprotected attacks and that preference disappears. The lion can roar before entering the arena. On the pitch, it needs to know where its next step goes.
