After the way the Inter game ended, the next fixture cannot come soon enough. Fiorentina host Atalanta at the Artemio Franchi on Thursday 29 October, kick-off 20:45. Three consecutive league defeats make the points important. Better control after winning or losing the ball is the immediate footballing task.[1], [2]

Atalanta need a response too

Maurizio Sarri’s side arrive after a 4–4 draw with Frosinone and one win in six matches. There are chances to trouble them, but enough quality to punish a mistake quickly. Fiorentina should not surrender the initiative simply because they need a calmer evening.[2]

What happens after a regain will matter. Two accurate passes can offer more relief than another long clearance. They let the defence step out and make Atalanta run towards their own goal. That is a useful starting point after San Siro.

Scalvini and Sulemana return to the squad

Giorgio Scalvini and Kamaldeen Sulemana are in Atalanta’s official 20-player squad. Scamacca, Bellanova, Hien and Kossounou remain among the absentees. The returns give Sarri more options, although a call-up does not establish readiness for a full match.[3]

Krstović and the players close to him, particularly De Ketelaere, need attention. While the centre-backs deal with the striker, midfield must protect the space in front of the box. A receiver allowed to turn there can release the next runner.

1. Protect the centre after the lay-off

For Inter’s equaliser, Thuram passed and continued his run for the return ball. Fiorentina should take that simple move seriously. Pressure on the ball needs cover on the nearest supporting player. Without both, a two-pass combination can beat several defenders.

Three Fiorentina priorities: pressure the wide pass, protect the centre and offer an exit after a regain
Our proposed plan combines wide pressure, central protection and a route out after winning the ball. This is a schematic proposal, not a predicted starting formation.

When a full-back steps out wide, the nearest midfielder should close the route inside. A colleague needs to see the run behind that pressure. Those jobs require coordination; getting more players behind the ball does not complete them on its own.

2. Keep a route out of defence

Vanoli needs a player able to receive under pressure and a teammate available for the next pass. Fagioli should have at least one safe option nearby. Otherwise the regain becomes a clearance and Fiorentina defend again.

Mastantuono can help through his dribbling, with cover behind the move if it breaks down. An attacking attempt should not immediately leave an open route towards De Gea.

3. Pressure the cross before defending it

Against Krstović, the pressure on the wide provider matters. A player allowed to look up and choose the moment makes the centre-backs’ duel harder. Wide pressure and central cover must work together.

At the other end, Fiorentina can make the Atalanta defence move: a forward comes short while a teammate runs beyond the line. That is a proposed attacking mechanism, not a predicted formation or confirmed eleven.

What the first fifteen minutes can tell us

  • Can Fiorentina keep the first ball they win?
  • Can Atalanta receive between the lines without pressure?
  • Who protects the centre when a full-back steps out?
  • Does Viola’s striker have close support with his back to goal?

The starting teams will be confirmed before kick-off. Whatever the selection, Fiorentina need clear responsibilities and calmer spells on the ball. The Franchi should see a side able to make a good moment last beyond one attack. Our analysis of the Inter defeat explains the previous setback.
