Daniel Passarella

Passarella joined Fiorentina from River Plate in 1982 as the captain of Argentina's 1978 world champions. He brought authority, aerial strength and the ability to carry the ball out of defence. Playing in the centre of the back line did not restrict his attacking ambition.

He spent four seasons in Florence. Set pieces, penalties and forward runs made him a defender opponents also had to watch in their own penalty area. Fiorentina gained both an organiser and an additional scoring threat.

He moved to Inter in 1986 and later coached, including a spell in charge of Argentina. His Florence years chiefly show a player who understood leadership as taking personal responsibility in the hardest passages of a match, at both ends of the field.
